The Hinsdale Men’s Chorus (HMC) was founded by Dr. John Baldwin (currently Professor of Theology at the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan), about twenty-five (25) years ago while he was pursuing his doctoral program at the University of Chicago. At that time, the members were, primarily, composed of employees of Hinsdale Hospital. The number of men in HMC averaged about forty-five (45).
Following Dr. Baldwin’s return to the faculty of Andrews University (thus relocating to Berrien Springs, Michi¬gan), shortly, after completing a recording, Mr. Olegario Mercado assumed the directorship of HMC. HMC took a little down time for a number of years in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, until Pastor Dan Smith — then, senior pastor of the Hinsdale Seventh-day Adventist Church (HSDAC) — taking an active interest in the re-establishment of HMC, solicited previous HMC members still in the area and others to re-establish HMC under the directorship of Dr. Arnold Hutabarat, shortly after Dr. Hutabarat transferred his membership in to HSDAC. While based out of and a ministry of HSDAC, HMC is presently composed of and welcomes men from a number of greater Chicagoland area churches.
HMC seeks to not only “glorify God in the presentation of excellence in inspirational music through the unique rich and beautiful sound of male voices in harmony” but in so doing to, additionally “spread the message of our God‘s truth and love through spoken word and music.”
As such, HMC has participated in two (2) world sessions of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists — Indianapolis, Indiana and Toronto,
Ontario — while continuing to make presentations at area (including downstate Illinois, Michigan, Indiana and Ohio) organizations/churches — both Seventh-day Adventist and those of other denominations. HMC has, also, performed at the College of DuPage, Glen Ellyn (Illinois) and Wheaton College, Wheaton (Illinois) for the Chicagoland Convocation.
In October 2007, HMC completed a fulfilling and enriching mission trip to Southeast Asia, which included involvement in the convocation of the Singapore Adventist Mission (SAM) and performance at the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) Conference Hall in the financial district of Singapore. During the day, at a transportation and town center in Singapore, HMC participated in a health fair providing health information and health screenings, tied in with health outreach meetings held at a nearby auditorium, in the evenings.
In Thailand, HMC enjoyed the warm Thai hospitality extended to them when making presentations on the main campus of Mission College (soon to be
known as Asia-Pacific International University), Muak Lek, Thailand and on the campus of Bangkok Adventist Hospital with Friday evening services for the School of Nursing and morning worship services for hospital employees.
Interestingly, HMC has not only performed at Men’s Ministries events . . . but also at events held by Women’s Ministries organizations! HMC has performed on ABC Chicago Channel 7 and participated in other telecasts, such as the “Ten Commandments Weekend” held at the Arie Crown Theater at McCormick Place in Chicago, and the “His Harvest Is Ready” evangelistic meetings held at the Hispanic Central Seventh-day Adventist Church. The last two events were telecast live on Three Angels Broadcasting Network (3ABN). HMC has appointments to be on the “Give Me the Bible Series” of Kenneth Cox Ministries, also to be telecast live on 3ABN; and is to be featured on Orion Television in Fall 2009.HMC has scheduled a 25th anniversary reunion in November in Hinsdale where all three (3) past and current directors will be in attendance and directing. We invite you to join us.
